Here are a couple of ways to get free traffic to your site without spending $$.
EntreCard
Entrecard is free ad service, where you put a entrecard widget on your site and people can buy avertiseing on your blog with entrcard credits and then you can spend entrecard credits on buying avertiseing spaces on other blogs and you can also get credits for droping your entrecard on other blogs. I signed up for entrecard about a week after it came out and it got very big and i droped 200 entrecards a day and got a lot of traffic and entrecard credits after a while i did not have time to drop any more and i lost most of my traffic from entrecard but it still gets me traffic.
BlogRush
Blogrush came out months ago and i start using it and it got me a couple of new readers on my blog and the people who clicked through stayed on my blog for a while. The way blogrush works is that you put widget on your blog and every time its viewed you get credits and for clicks as well and then the credits are used to avertise on other blogs with the widget and it does it automatic and the widget that shows your blog will show your latest post.
Search Engines
Seach engines can get you a lot of traffic, the likes of google and yahoo get billions of seaches every day and if you can pick the right keywords for your blog and make your site search engine friendly you can get a lot of traffic from seach engines and the better the search engine rank you have the more traffic you get to your site.

Exchange Links
What about find sites that are the same as yours and ask them do they want to exchange links or avertiseing, they get an ad on your site and you get one on their site this would be helping each other out for free.
